The EpicShare article, Georgia’s Push to Save Mothers: Universal Screening for Maternal Cardiovascular Disease, spotlights the work of Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) and its implementation of universal maternal cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening using Epic. This standardized approach ensures that every pregnant and postpartum patient—up to one year after delivery—is screened for CVD risk factors, helping identify serious conditions earlier and connect patients to appropriate care.

In just two years, NGHS screened more than 10,000 patients and identified 403 individuals with increased cardiovascular risk, ensuring they received follow-up monitoring, testing, or specialty care. This kind of system-level approach is critical in Georgia, where maternal mortality rates remain among the highest in the nation and where many pregnancy-related cardiovascular deaths are considered preventable.
